Filler tank and hopper sizing calculator

Estimate the volume required to keep a filler supplied between replenishments. The nominal vessel must also allow for agitation, foam, surge, heating coils, level control, cleaning and a safe working fill level.

Enter the planning assumptions
Use the largest planned dose for the first capacity check.
Use the rate the complete line must maintain.
Time the vessel should support production without replenishment.
Covers variation and control response.
Leave freeboard for agitation, foam and safe operation.

How to use the result

The vessel is part of the process control

A balance tank or hopper stabilises product supply but can also change temperature, aeration, particle suspension or powder compaction. Select geometry and agitation around the product, not only the calculated litres.

Match refill method to consumption

Manual tipping, tote transfer, pump feed, vacuum conveying, screw feeding and loss-in-weight replenishment each create different surges and interruptions. The refill system should support the combined instantaneous demand of all filling heads.

Plan cleaning and product recovery

A larger vessel gives more buffer but increases residual product, cleaning area and warm-up or cool-down time. Review drainability, access, outlet position, dead legs and whether changeover frequency makes a smaller vessel more effective.

Common questions

How large should a filling-machine hopper be?

Start with dose multiplied by packs per minute and the desired refill interval, add reserve, then divide by the permitted working fill percentage.

Why not run a vessel completely full?

Agitation, foaming, thermal expansion, level-control response and safe handling normally require freeboard.

Does the calculator work for powders?

It estimates volume demand, but powders require bulk density, flowability, compaction and feeder geometry to be considered.

Can a larger tank increase line speed?

Only when product supply is the constraint; it can also make cleaning and product recovery slower.

Turn the calculation into a testable specification

Confirm the result with the real product, pack and complete line.

Lancing can review the assumptions, identify the likely bottleneck and plan representative machinery trials.
