Packaging line troubleshooting

Label wrinkles, creases and trapped bubbles

Wrinkles and bubbles normally reflect pack shape, label stiffness, surface condition, web control or wipe-down geometry. Check the label and container together.

Recognise the symptom before changing settings

Describe what changes, where it first appears and whether it follows a product batch, packaging batch, filling head, lane, speed, temperature or time in the run. Typical observations include:

  • creases form at one edge
  • bubbles appear under clear labels
  • wrinkles increase around tapers or panels
  • the label starts straight but finishes skewed

Likely causes to separate

A symptom can have several unrelated causes. Treat the following as hypotheses to test rather than a list of settings to change at once.

  • label construction too stiff for the surface
  • container taper, ovality or panel variation
  • moisture, oil, dust or condensation on the pack
  • incorrect peel-plate, wipe or wrap-belt setting
  • web tension or product speed mismatch

Check in this order

Check 1

Mark where the first wrinkle or bubble starts.

Check 2

Clean and dry test packs to separate contamination from geometry.

Check 3

Measure taper and circumference variation.

Check 4

Compare label stocks and adhesive recommendations.

Check 5

Film peel, contact and wipe-down at operating speed.

Corrective actions to evaluate

After the cause is demonstrated, select the least disruptive correction that returns the process to a safe, repeatable and approved state.

  • select a label construction suited to the surface
  • stabilise and dry the container
  • adjust peel position, web tension and wipe geometry
  • use tapered-pack compensation or multi-panel application
  • control container rotation and label-to-product speed
Stop and escalate when safety or product release is uncertainDo not bypass guards, interlocks, pressure protection, hazardous-area controls or quality rejects to keep the line running. Follow the machinery instructions and the site risk assessment.

Prevent the problem returning

  • trial printed production labels, not blank samples only
  • store labels to supplier conditions
  • approve containers across supplier batches
  • retain labeller centreline settings by format

Record evidence, not only the final setting

Capture the product and packaging batches, machine recipe, head or lane, speed, temperature, vessel level, symptom frequency, intervention and post-correction results. This creates a usable centreline and allows recurring loss to be prioritised through OEE or downtime analysis.

Common questions

What is the first check for label wrinkles, creases and trapped bubbles?

Mark where the first wrinkle or bubble starts.

What commonly causes label wrinkles, creases and trapped bubbles?

Common causes include label construction too stiff for the surface, container taper, ovality or panel variation, moisture, oil, dust or condensation on the pack.

Should the machine be adjusted immediately?

Change one controlled variable at a time after the measurement method, product condition, packaging and safety state are confirmed.

When should production be stopped?

Stop and follow the site safe-isolation and escalation procedure when there is risk of injury, contamination, fire or explosion, uncontrolled product release, damaged guards, unsafe pressure or an unverified quality result.

What information should be recorded?

Record product and pack batch, recipe, machine settings, filling head or lane, time, temperature, speed, symptom, corrective action and the evidence that performance returned to the approved condition.
